General Notes: Husband - Szlama Salomon Cohn

Szlama [Salomon] Cohn was a son of Wolf Michel Cohn (Leipziger) and Sora Rochel Cohn. He was born on Aug. 31, 1818 in Warsaw. He moved to Odessa where he owned a bank with his brother Gecel. This information comes from the memoirs of Ita nee Pi nes Yellin, daughter of Hinda nee Cohn Pines, sister of Szlama (Salomon) Cohn. Szlama (Salomon) was married to Hinde Jekelis. On the marriage record of his daughter Ester, from 1885, he is described as a negocyant in Odessa. Presumably he live d first in Tysmienica in Galicia, since, according to the marriage record of his daughter Ester, she was born there. And on the marriage record of his daughter Chaia [Clara] he is described as being from Tysmienica.

The maiden name of Szlama's wife Hinde can be deduced from some information in the book Geza Yishai (1854). This book gives information about most of the fathers of the daughters-in-law of Wolf Michel Cohn (Leipziger). In the list of names the a uthor includes: "The wealthy Elazar Jekelis [son-in-law of the wealthy Abraham Isaac from Tysmenitz], son of the rabbi of Jaworow [Yavoriv] and grandson of Rabbi Elazar from Amsterdam." By process of elimination Hinde must be the daughter of Ela zar Jekelis.

Elazar Jekelis is mentioned in the donors list in the book Limudei Hateva under the town of Tysmenitz [Tysmienica]. He died in Lwow in 1854, aged 56. His wife was Serka Bluhstein, probably a daughter of Abraham Bluhstein (who died in 1833, 48 ye ars old). Elazar had a sister named Hinde (b. 1822). Since Salomon Cohn's daughter Ester had a son named Luzer, and since Hinde's age is close to Salomon's it might seem likely that Elazar Jekelis's sister Hinde was Salomon's wife (rather than E lazar Jekelis's daughter Hinde). However, the books do not verigy this and indicate that Elazar Jekelis was the father-in-law.
