General Notes: Husband - Chaim (Jochem/Herman) Cohn

Chaim Cohn was born on January 6, 1817 in Warsaw, District IV. He was the eldest child of Dawid Cohn and Szajna Ruchla nee Jeszurin. He was married in Kempen (Kepno) on December 29, 1835 to Rozalia (Reitze) Landau, daughter of Rabbi Josef Samue l Landau and Dina Elke nee Peretz. In the Kempen records Chaim's given name is Jochem, Jochim, or Joachim. According to his marriage record he was 24 years old at the time of his marriage (but he was actually 18, almost 19). He was a sik mercha nt like his father Dawid Cohn. According to one source (a biographical dictionary entry for his son Jozua) Chaim apparently also used the kinui "Hermann."

Chaim and Rozalia later moved to Vienna, Austria, perhaps in the 1870s, probably taking their younger children with them. Rozalia is buried in the Jewish Cemetery in the town of Modling, 14 km, south of Vienna. But it is not certain if they live d there or if she simply was buried in Modling but died in Vienna, since the name Chaim Cohn occurs in an old Viennese address book from the years 1870-1881 (with a gap in 1875). Her tombstone inscription in Hebrew confirms that she i sthe daught er of Rabbi Yosef Shmuel HaLevi Landau of Kempren, son of Rabbi Israel Jonah Halevi Landau, and that she is the wife of Chaim Cohn from Warsaw. According to the Hebrew date she died on 19 Av 1881. The Gregorian date of her death is July 27, 1880 . But the Gregorian date July 27 agrees with the Hebrew date 19 Av only in 1880. So she probably died int the year 1880 [5640].

In the Zentalfriedhof in Vienna, there is a grave of a man named Chaim Cohn, originally from Warsaw. He died on April 9, 1882 and was 64 years old. He was buried on April 12, 1882. His address at the time o fhis death was Herrengasse 35, in Wah ring (a suburb of Vienna) which seems to be the address of the Jewish Hospital. This corresponds with Chaim Cohn, the husband of Rozalia, and his age fits exactly. So it is very likely him, since Chaim's wife Rozalia was buried in Modling near V ienna. Furthermore, there is no other "Chaim Cohn" in the Warsaw records found in JRI-Poland who could be a possible match for this Chaim Cohn from Warsaw buried in Vienna.
