  General Notes:

(b. 1902, Ujhely; d. 25 Tevet, 1974) Rabbi. He was married twice. His first wife was Hena Zisla Teitelbaum, a daughter of Chaim Yaakov Teitelbaum, son of the above mentioned Rabbi Moshe Yosef Teitelbaum (1842-1897). Hena Zisla was Rabbi Tzvi H irsch Meisels’ cousin, being the daughter of his mother. Or in other words he married the daughter of his uncle Rabbi Chaim Yaakov Teitelbaum.

In the town of Naimark in Galicia he was the head of a yeshiva. In 1930 he became head rabbi of Veitzen, Hungary (or some say he was only a dayan in Veitzen). In 1944 he was sent to Auschwitz with his whole community. In Auschwitz he gave lectu res and strengthened the other inmates. Later he was in Bergen-Belsen. In 1945 after the liberation of Bergen-Belsen he was appointed Rav of the British Occupation Zone. In 1946 he moved to Paris and in 1948 he came to America, and lived in Chi cago. In Chicago he was known as the Veitzener Rav of Chicago. He founded a school -- the Veitzener Cheder (Yeshiva Shearis Yisroel) in Chicago -- which is still flourishing. He wrote a book entitled She’eilos U’teshuvos Mikadeshei Hashem, whic h includes information from his time in Auschwitz.

[Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Meisels’ brother-in-law was Rabbi Shlomo Halberstam (1907-2000), the third Bobover Rebbe who encouraged him to come to America. Rabbi Shlomo Halberstam was married to Bluma Rachel Teitelbaum, daughter of Rabbi Chaim Yaakov Teit elbaum from Limanow. (Bluma Rachel was his first wife). Rabbi Shlomo Halberstam was, like Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Meisels, also a nephew of Rabbi Chaim Yaakov Teitelbaum, since Rabbi Chaim Yaakov Teitelbaum was married to Rabbi Shlomo Halberstam’s mot her’s sister].

Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Meisels is buried in the Washington Cemetery (Floral Park), Monmouth, New Jersey (Satmar section, next to the ohel of Rav Yechezkel Mertz).

His first wife and seven of their children were murdered in Auschwitz. In the USA he married again and had nine children from this marriage.

Rabbi married Hena Zisla Teitelbaum, daughter of Chaim Yaakov Teitelbaum and Unknown.
