  General Notes:

Influential pedagogue who promoted new theories about educatin. Private secretary for Prince Max von Baden. He founded a boarding school at the Prince's castle near Lake Constance called Schule Schloss Salem. After speaking out publicly agains t Hitler he was imprisoned for five days. He was released due to an appeal of the British Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald. In July 1933 he moved to Britain where he founded a school at Gordonstoun, Elgin, Morayshire, in Scotland. In 1945 he con verted to Christianity (Church of England). He lived for many years in Britain but returned to Germany in 1953 living in Hermannsberg. He died in Ravensburg and was buried in Salem.
