He was a well known gynecologist. He studied at the universities of Breslau, Wurzburg, and Berlin. From 1874 to 1876 he taught gynecology in Breslau. In 1876 he began lecturing in gynecology at the University of Berlin and was appointed a ful l professor in 1893. Together with his brother Theodor he opened a gynecolocgical clinic [Frauenklinik] in Berlin in 1892 which was very successful and enjoyed an international reputation. He conducted research on gynecology and wrote several wo rks on the subject.

He was active in German Jewish community affairs and served as a delegate to the conference of Jewish communiities of Germany. He was a co-founder of the Akademie fur die Wissenschaft des Judentums and the Kurse fur auslandische Studierende. Leo pold was also a Zionist. He promoted colonization in Palestine for over twenty years and was a sponsor of the national library in Jerusalem.

The Universal Jewish Encyclopedia states: "He was a descendant of Rabbi Ezekiel Landau."

Leopold was married to Johanna Jacoby, who came from a wealthy banking family in Berlin.
