Jakob Cohn was the fourth son of Dawid Cohn and Szajna Ruchla nee Jeszurin. He was born in Warsaw on March 12, 1825. He was married twice. His first wife was Mayta Liebman from Brody. They were married in Zamosc on March 9, 1845. Mayta wa s a daughter of Szmul Liebman, a merchant in Brody, and his wife Czarna. Jakob Cohn and Mayta lived in Bordy and Mayta had at least two stillborn children. The first, a female, was born and died on May3, 1846. The second, a male, died on Cotobe r 9, 1848. Mayta herself died a few days later on October 12, 1848. This information comes from the All Galicia Database of the website Gesher Galicia.
Jakob Cohn took part in the revolution of 1848 (in Polish: Wiosna Ludow [Spring of Nations]), in Galicia. According to an article by one of his descendants, Helena Balicka-Kozlowska, he then had to flee from Galicia and so he returned to Warsaw . She also writes that he was a grain merchant while living in Galicia.
Jakob's second wife was Paulina (Pessa) Halpern [Heilpern] (born 1836). They were married on August 4, 1857 in Warsaw. She was also from Brody and was a daughter of Pinkus Halpern and Chana Frajds nee Halpern. According to the book Udzial Zydo w w Walce o niepodleglosc Polski (1938) by Janusz Konrad Urbach (page 133) her brother Izydor Heilpern, who was a participant in the January 1863-64 Uprising, was born in Bordy.
Jakob Cohn died on October 8, 1871 in Warsaw and is buried in the Warsaw Jewish Cemetery. His tombstone contains an engraving of the symbol of the kohanim, two hands in the form of a blessing, and on the back the inscription of a Hebrew poem comp soed by his brother Tobiasz Cohn. Jakob Cohn and Paulina nee Halpern had at leasst five children.
