General Notes:
He was a Rabbi, author, and historian. He moved to Eretz Yisrael in 1888 settling in Zichron Yaakov where he worked as a teacher. He was active in the revival of Hebrew as a modern spoken language, together with his brother-in-law and relative , Yechiel Michel Pines, and Eliezer Ben Yehuda. He also initiated the custon of planting trees on Tu B'Shvat when he took his students out to plant trees on this holiday in 1890. The custom quickly spread. It was adopted by the Jewish Nationa l Fund in 1903 and by the Jewish Teachers Union in 1908 and is now a national tradition in Israel.
In 1894 Yavetz returned to Europe. In Vilna he participated in the foundation of the Mizrachi party for religious Zionists. He edited the movement's newspaper, Ha-Mizrachi, from 1903-1904, served on the party's Board of Directors, and also wrot e the first statement outlining the party's purpose. He later moved to Germany and finally settled in London where he wrote his 14-volume history of Israel, Toldot Yisrael. The moshav (settlement), Kfar Yavetz, founded in 1932 as a kibbutz, wa s named in his honor.
Zeev Yavetz was married twice. His forst wife was Feiga Toibe Pines, whom he married in 1866. She was a daugher of Meir Yosef Pines, who was a brother of Noach Pines (the husband of Hinda Cohn, daughter of Wolf Michel Cohn and Sora Rochel Cohn) . Feiga Toibe died the next year, July 29, 1867 and is buried in the Warsaw Jewish Cemetary. Her father, Meir Yosef Pines, is also buried in the Warsaw Jewish Cemetery.
Zeev Yavetz's second wife was Golda Pines, daughter of Noach Pines and Hinda Cohn (daughter of Wolf Michel cohn and Sora Rochel Cohn). Golda was born on December 8, 1853 and died on February 10, 1912.
