From his obituary [Detroit Free Press]: Arthur M. Sills, whose passion was wheeling and dealing in the real estate business, died of cancer of the pancreas Wenesday [February 7th, 2003] at his home in Bloomfield Hills. He was 77 and was called Archie. He owned First Holding Corporatio n and FH Management, both in West Bloomfield. Mr. Sills worked until the day he died, and his daughter Susie, who worked with him, will continue the business. When he wasn't actually on the job, he'd drive around in his convertible looking at pr operty. "When we'd go for a ride when we were kids, we'd look for a piece of property," his daughter said. "He worked because he enjoyed it. It was love to him. "After everybody closed and he couldn't possibly look at any other property, he wo uld go to the Jewish Community Center and work out, and he had many friendships there. "Of course, I'm sure when they were running on the track they talked about property." Mr. Sills was born in New York and came to Detroit when he was about 1 0 years old. He graduated from Central High School and went to Wayne State University for a semester before he was drafted into the Army in 1943 during World War II and sent to Europe. "He drove an ambulance and couldn't stand the sight of blood ," his daughter said. "He also didn't have a driver's license." At home after the war, he went to the University of Michigan for two years, then went to work for his family's retail clothing business, Wonderful Tots and Teens, on the east side . "My mother made him go to law school, and he went to the Detroit College of Law," his daughter said. Armed with his degree, he joined the law practgive of a man who was heavily involved in real estate work - and the die was cast. Besides hi s daughter, survivors include his wife of 54 years, Rhoda; another daughter, Claudia; a son Douglas, and four grandchildren. His son Lawrence died in the 1987 Northwest Airlines [flight 255] plane crash near Metro Airport. The funeral will be a t 1 p.m. today at the Dorfman Chapel, 30440 Twelve Mile Road, Farmington Hills, with burial in Clover Hill Park Cemetery, Birmingham.
