General Notes: Wife - Ita Pines

Like her mother she was a founder of Ezrat Nashim and an active worker for women's charities. She took over the runnign of Beit Hamachse. She guided it through difficult times and saved it when the Turks wanted to close it during the First Worl d War. Among her charitable activities: she took care of the sick during the typus epidemic, provided food and medicine for starving Yemenite famililes and the sick in the Mishkanot neighborhood. She received the M.B.E. award (Member of the Bri tish Empire) by the British, but later returned it as a protest during the Arab revolts of 1936-1939. Her husband, David Yellin, likewise returned his M.B.E.

David Yellin's father, Joshua Yellin, was originally from Poland and his mother was from the well-known Sasson family of Baghdad. David Yellin was the founder of the Hebrew Teachers Siminary in Jerusalem and a lecturer on medieval literature at t he Hebrew University. He was also a member of the Ottoman Parliament (in 1913) and was exiled to Damascus for his Zionist activities. He was a promoter of Hebrew as a spoken language and also edited his father-in-law's writings.
