General Notes: Husband - Avinoam Yellin

Avinoam was an Orientalist and teacher of Arabic leterature. He worke d for the Palestine Ministry of Education with the official title of M andate Government Inspector of the Jewish Schools. He was shot on Oct ober 21, 1937, during the period of the Arab riots, as he was enterin g his office, and died two days later. He collaborated with Levi Bill ig on a book about teaching Arabic entitled An Arabic Reader (1931, re printed 1963). Billig, a lectrurer in Arabic at the Hebrew Universit y and a believer in Jewish-Arab reconciliation, had also been murdere d by an Arab sniper the year before. The Avinoam Botanical Garden i n the David Yellin Academic College of Education in Jerusalem was name d in his honor by his parents, David and Ita Yellin, after their son s death.

Avinoam, like his parents, was also awarded the M.B.E. by the British.

Avinoam's wife Elza, was a daughter of Dr. Elezar (Lazar) Halevi Gruen hut (1850-1913). He was born in Gerenda, Hungary, son of Rabbi Mosh e Gruenhut. Eleazer was rabbi of Temesvar, Hungary and also studied s ecular subjects. He came to Eretz Yisrael and was involved in the Miz rachi movement. He was a scholar of Midrash, Palestinian geography an d also director of the Jewish boys' orphanage in Jaffa.
